Credit Union Eligibility Explained: How to Know If You Can Become a Member

If you’ve ever wondered, “Am I eligible to join Credit Union of Georgia?”—you’re asking the right question. Credit union eligibility can sound technical and complicated at first, but at its core, it simply defines who can become a member and benefit from everything a credit union has to offer.

At Credit Union of Georgia, eligibility is centered around one simple idea: serving you and your community. Life is busy, finances can feel overwhelming, and the goal is to make banking easier, more personal, and more rewarding for the people who live and work in the communities we serve.

What Does Credit Union Eligibility Really Mean?

Credit union eligibility refers to the specific geographic or community connections that allow you to join. Unlike traditional banks, credit unions are not-for-profit financial institutions built to serve members rather than shareholders.

This structure is what allows Credit Union of Georgia to stay focused on what matters most:

• Providing fast, friendly, and local service
• Offering reliable financial education and guidance from professionals who know and understand what is important to you
• Returning value to our members through better rates and fewer fees
• Supporting and serving our local communities and schools through reinvestment

Who is Eligible to Join Credit Union of Georgia?

If you live or work in any of the following Georgia counties, you are eligible to join:

Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, Dawson, Douglas, Fannin, Forsyth, Fulton, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Paulding, Pickens, or Union County

That’s it!

Living or working in an eligible county already qualifies you for membership. You may also qualify through other connections, such as a family member who’s a teacher in one of these counties. If you’re unsure, it’s worth checking—many people qualify without realizing it.

Why is Eligibility Based on Community?

Credit Union of Georgia was founded in 1960 with a mission to serve local teachers and school employees. That commitment to education and community still shapes everything we do today.

The credit union model is built differently from a traditional bank. As a not-for-profit institution, we do not focus on shareholder profits. Instead, our earnings are returned directly to Credit Union of Georgia members through:

• Competitively low loan rates
• Better savings opportunities
• Fewer and lower fees
• Improved member services

This structure only works when membership is rooted in a shared community; this is where eligibility comes in.

What Do You Get as a Member?

Eligibility is just the first step. Once you join, as a member, you gain access to our full suite of financial tools designed to make your life easier.

That includes:

How to Know If You’re Eligible

The simplest way to determine membership eligibility is to ask:

Do you live or work in one of Credit Union of Georgia’s eligible counties?

Or

Do you have an immediate family member who is a teacher in one of Credit Union of Georgia’s eligible counties?

If yes, you qualify.

From there, joining is straightforward—open a membership account and start accessing member benefits right away.

And if you’re still unsure, checking eligibility takes only a few minutes and can open the door to a more personalized banking experience.

Ready to Join?

Credit Union of Georgia was created to help make financial management simple, educational, and rewarding for the communities we serve. If you meet the eligibility requirements, becoming a member means joining a financial institution that puts our people first, not profit.
